Only you can make you a better citizen, what they can do is make you more knowledgeable about what has happened in the past therefore what the consequences of our actions are today.

u know about the past, and will be less likely to make some of the mistakes made then. u can help make our country a better place to live in by knowing what to prevent and how to move into the future. but...i hate history!! and cultural anthro in college...YUCK!

One who doesn't learn from history is doomed to repeat it.
It also helps to know how governments work, thus one's expectations of what government can and cannot, or should and should do are more reasonable.
Lastly, knowledge is a tool. Bettering oneself comes from within.
