If you allow the ice trays to come to room temp before you refill them, you will get better results(whole cubes).
Or just run water from the tap over them so the temp of the tray and the water going in them is the same.
I had to prove this to my boyfriend at one time so I know it works!!

Maybe the person who took them out of the tray squeezed to hard

ice cubes always freeze from the outside in. they shatter due to stress of removing the cube, or impurities in the water.

water expands during the freezing process and if the sides freeze first, the ice will shear and crack.

Depends how much air got in. Less air = more clarity and stability.
