I think it just shows an lack of familiarity between the two people, but an attempt to be friendly in a nice way. If people are good friends, and one is still called those things, then yes its disrespectful not to use the person's real name. These types of 'nicknames' of sorts are also helpful when you forget a name or don't feel comfortable enough around the person to refer to them by their first name, as they may not know yours.

Where I come from when a person calls you 'boss' or 'chief' it's a dead giveaway that they have spent time in prison...Most accurate way to spot an ex-convict is by their vocabulary. It's meant to give the illusion of respect from a disrespectful source.

Some individuals have a certain panache about them that sets them apart from the herd. Their vibes signal that they are a seperate force and they are recognized as a chief or boss or leader of some kind or other. I know an 85 year old gentleman that is called "General"; he was and will always be a major general, us army. Even people who never met him recognize something different about him when they meet him. I think it is genetically encoded into their physical makeup or something.

If someone says it to you like an employee they are just acnowledging that they see you as above them, or in charge.

If they say it in a condecending tone then they could be saying" Don't be so bossy, azz" or stop trying to order me around cause you aren't my boss.
