Psychiatry is a specialty board certification. The residency is typically 1 year. But first you would need to complete medical school, including a medical residency for your initial board certification. So you are really talking about a year for your medical residency, then a second year for your psychiatric residency. Some people do a third year of residency if they want to be certified in a psychiatric specialty as well (e.g. forensic, child, or geriatric).

The American Psychiatric Association posts information on their website concerning residency programs and careers in psychiatry. Go to www.psych.org
