I've heard that you can have a perfectly healthy pregnancy and baby and the baby can get cerebral palsy at birth from the cord being wrapped around the neck. How much truth is there in that? What is the true cause of cerebral palsy?

I work with babies with CP. We know it has to do with a loss of oxygen to the brain, but the exact causes are unknown. It's true that you can have a perfectly healthy pregnancy and have a baby with CP since it's not evident until after birth, sometimes even when the child is a year old. Many babies have the cord wrapped around their neck and it causes them no damage. I was born with the cord wrapped around my neck 2x. The doctor unwraps it after delivering the head, but before delivering the body. The baby at that time is receiving oxygen through the umbilical cord so it usually doesn't affect them.

Cerebral Palsy is caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. My cousin had a baby and he has it. What happened was she was in labor, but the doctor left the room and told her she still had a while to go. But when she said she felt something down there, her husband looked and the babys head was caught and the cord was wrapped twice. By the time the doc got back and delivered the baby, which was about 5 minutes, damage was done. She sued and won. Her baby now has Cerebral Palsy and Dandy Walker Syndrome. Her pregnancy was healthy, the child is not.

Any birth trama may cause cerebral palsy. It happens if the baby doesn't get enough oxygen to the brain. So sometimes when the baby is stuck in the birth canel too long, or whatever other factors that cause the baby not to get enough oxgen. Baby cannot be delivered if cord is wrapped, you'd have to have a c-section, otherwise the baby wouldn't make it. Another cause could be congenital, meaning the baby is born with the illness. You cannot detect that until birth or sometime after.

Cerebral Palsy is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain during birth. My mom was diagnosed at 17 months old with it and she is almost 60 years old. Her case was the result of the doctor not being in the delivery room at the time that my mother crowned and the nurse slamming my grandmother's legs back together, forcing my mom back into the birth canal. Depend on how much oxygen the brain is deprived of it could be a mild case or severe. My mom has no muscle control on the left side of her body but can perform any normal task. She raised me and my sister (I'm 33 and my sister is 31).

It is normally caused from a lack of oxygen. My best friend was born with it. She was a preemie and her oxygen had been cut off for several minutes before she was born.
