My lawn has a number of tree roots breaking the ground. Not only is it a bumpy mowing exercise but also takes away some from the appearance of the lawn. I am considering covering the roots with mud and putting grass seeds on the mud pile. Any other suggestions? I am not about to cut all the trees in my yard, so please don't suggest that.

that will work for a while , but the hard truth is that with old trees they will continue to do this, putting too much soil above the roots will even kill the tree.

Solution-
Put a large tree ring around the treee(remove grass and put in round muclh circle)
Then for the rest of roots put only 2" of soil on top of the roots (meaning you'll have about 3-4" in the low spot) then seed the area(patchmaster by scotts works awesome)

You could use rock salt ! pour rock salt from your local hardware store all over the top ! It will take weeks but it really works ! If it rains add more and more don't give up !!!
