Last night on CSI, Chrstine was raped. There was a scene of her scrapping under her finger nails, and then she inserted a tampon. It looked like she removed the tampon right after insertion and put it in a bag for evidence. Is this a way of collecting DNA evidence after a woman is raped?

They usually use a cotton swab, but if it was on CSI must be true as they have people who work on the field as tech advisors!

I still think a tampon wouldn't be very logical, though. First the woman is hurt and bruised... Can you imagine it going in? It hurt like hell... Try applying one when you're not on your period... It goes in drying and is very unconfortable. Then I am not sure if the fibers are the proper material to actually collect evidence without harming it. I am not in the US right now so I missed the episode...
Btw, who is Christine?

You may be mistaking something from a "rape kit" for a Tampon. Then need to take (nurses) swabs and semen from the inside of the vagina to compare it to whoever is "caught" or "pointed out as the rapist." This way no innocent person is sent to prison. A Dr. or Nurse almost ALWAYS will do this for sensitivity reasons.

She isn't sleazy or lowbrow. She is polite, nicely mannered, and considerate of others thoughts. does not look down her nostril at people she meets. Is respectful and compassionate and the place she would manage to assist a individual she would manage to. She outfits accurately and is not any longer a Hoochy Mama on the Dancefloor, shakin' that booty, like an newbie stripper, for all the lads to leer like lions. Has a actual looking point of education, a feeling of style and decorum.

It's not the conventional method (because tampons are so thick that they can hurt if you take them out straight after putting them in) but it would certainly work as well as a normal swab because that's all it is, tightly packed cotton wool.

No usually they use a speculum which opens the vagina then do a scraping like they do in a PAP smear test. I'm not sure why they used a tampon like thing they try not hurt you any further or traumatize the woman further.

although it looks like a tampon its not, it is a special fiber that does not allow it to shed...tampons are cotton and can shed small pieces contaminating an area. i can't remember what the collector she is using is called though, there is a specific name and its part of a rape kit. maybe the show has a link to things they use...check out their website.

it could hold DNA on it, just as it holds blood. but REAL life police dont use tampons, they just do a rape kit.
