It is NOT pronounced as if it were spelled N U K U L A R - so why do so many public officials & supposedly learned people say it the wrong way? I'm talking several Presidents (present & past) college educated people, newscasters, etc. Do they not realize how ignorant they sound because the can not pronounce the word correctly?? It's nu-CLE-ar - that is the only way is should be pronounced!!!!!

O lord, I certainly didn't realize anyone would think I sounded like a frustrated English school teacher - sheesh.
I can't believe that nookUlar would ever be considered a correct pronunciation!!

Now, why would someone go & rate my question a "thumbs down"?? I hate when that happens - I mean, I really hate when that happens!!! It's not THAT bad a question, is it? Yes, I'm taking it personally!!! lmao

Thanks fyrfly!!! You're quite right - that's another word many people mangle!! lol
I hadn't realized I'd gotten so picky over grammar & pronunciation - maybe I am just a frustrated old English teacher wannabe!!! lmao Is it too late for me to get a teaching degree? The kids in my classes would learn, but they probably wouldn't like it very much!!

I just gave your question a thumbs-up to counteract the thumbs down. I agree, this kind of mispronunciation is as irritating as nails on chalkboard. If there is a dictionary out there that condones "nukular" as a correct pronunciation, it's probably published by Dick Cheney.

In my area there's a radio spot currently airing in which the speaker pronounces menstruation as menustrayshun, more than once. AAAAUUUUGHHHH!

Although this question has been answered correctly by so many, I had to add my comment anyway. Yours is not an invalid or stupid question. You're not alone--there are lots of us who cringe when we hear words mispronounced or see them spelled incorrectly. And it's getting worse every day! Keep at 'em!!

For the record--I say noo-klee-er!

The word nuclear is correctly pronounced /nooklee er, /. The often-heard /nookyeler, / is incorrect.

I've always said NEW-klee-er, that's the way I was taught and frankly, try as I might, I just can't say it any other way, my lips and tongue just don't work that way.
