I spent 21 years in the Navy. Always putting the job first. I did not go to the hospital unless I had to. Work always came first.

Now on a new job. I need to go my boss seemed ok with it. since I am in the office most of the time, I need one of the mechanics to cover. I asked if he had anything going on the next few weeks in the early am. His response was of course not I put the job first!!

I know the reason he said that is cuz we have another employee who has a hard problem getting to work on time (ever day he is late)

Now I feel bad. I know i should put myself first and get my tennis elbow looked at.

You are not doing anyone any good by neglecting your health.

It is to your employer's advantage to have happy and healthy employees. Do not feel guilty about taking time off because I am sure your employer is more than happy with your work performance.

You need to have a life outside your work. This is difficult since you have been in the military for so many years and you did not have to think as an individual, but as a team.

You need to start seeking out your own happiness as an individual.

Good luck.

I tell you this... as a HR person,

Get the elbow looked at casue you'll cost them more in the end when you ahve to go on workers compensation cause you are no longer able to perform the regular duties of your job. They'll have to replace you and pay you some money. In turn their premiums go up...

So if your boss gives you a hard time, gently remind him of that.

Yes, go to the doc. Don't worry about big mouth. It's best to ignore such comments at work and not think about them and respond to them. One trip to the doctor wouldn't detract from your excellent work ethic. What comes first, your health or your job? Your health.

I look at it this way:

Beyond your ability to show up and do the work required of you, the company you work for couldn't care less about you. That being said, make yourself your primary responsibility.

You are putting work first, if you dont take care of yourself then you wont be able to work. Its a long term strategy. get cold: you are a tool, sometimes you need to do some basic maintenance, oil up whatever...

Go take care of yourself. They know you work hard and you wouldn't take time off unless you really needed to. You know how guys are. They give each other crap all the time over nothing, and they know what buttons to push. They are treating you like one of the "guys", so try not to take it personally.

Yes putting your career first is always good, but if you can't perform the task given then what good are.
