Read other questions on here and you will see immature name calling, countless Hitler references, and an amaziing level of anger aimed at anyone with an opinion different than the asker.

I am a liberal. However, I understand that this nation can not move forward nor this world improve by liberal hands alone. Neither can it do so with only conservative hands, or moderate hands at the wheel. No mass of people can move forward with half pushing and half pulling. We will have disagreements, that is human nature. The question is will we again learn to conduct mature discourse in order to resolve those disagreements? For the sake of our nation, and the world we had best do so.

The keynote to your question is MATURE...now how many mature and intelligent thoughts have you seen here. Most are nonsensical and illogical. Many advocate violence and absurd ideas. I live in Asia where I see people gaining in both economy as well as a profound knowledge of the world but I see the US as losing both. It seems as if there is a superiority attitude amongst Americans that causes them to lose touch with reality and they don't appreciate that the world is becoming smaller each day and the ideas that they flaunt will bite them on the butt. With this kind of attitude and this false superiority, I would give no chance for logical debate....simply wild, thoughtless rhetoric

If you are a liberal and you can still intelligently discuss issue without spewing venom about the president or mixing conspiracy theory in with the truth, you are a minority. Every left wing argument lately seems so laced with hatred toward the president that the objectivity of the subject is scewed and rarely has facts backing them up. Its usually some conspiracy theory that they got off of the web. When a reliable news source like CBS starts producing fraudulent documents just to make the president look bad, it takes the lefts credibility to new lows.

I hope so, too. I'm cynical that public discourse will ever elevate itself to substantive, meaningful discussions. It's all sound bytes, flame wars, name calling etc. And especially don't look for meaningful discourse on message boards, Yahoo Answers! or many other Internet mediums of communication. The anonymity affored by the Internet allows for a stunning level of juvenile behavior.

I think everyone on this forum is capable of mature discussion, many just choose not to do so. A lot of people are entertained by argument and say extreme things in order to get a strong reaction. In the 'real' world, face to face, people would not say half of what they say to each other here. Respect is much easier to come by in person.

With the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter still wielding major influence, I think mature political discussion is going down the drain.

Oh toffeefan, maybe the present political atmosphere is not ideal for what you have in mind! And, your idea, however good your intentions may be, sounds utopian as there can be found no perfect political society anywhere in the world!

That would make a great sound bite, and I agree, however it is awfully hard dealing with people who have nothing to offer but hatred and bigotry, and every other kind of anti people platform!
