The info our government makes public is like the tip of the iceberg compared to what they hide from us.

I'm sure there's a lot the govt isn't telling us - both on Iraq and life not of this world.
Mainly, there would be such an outcry if any govt came forth with that information and freely told their people about it. Especially those from the religious (far) right. They don't believe that kind of stuff - it'd go against their values and judgements. I'm sure they'd be the first to cry.
EDIT:
This is in response to TIZZY -
The reason it would bring an uproar to the religious right is because of the teachings of the bible - where clearly it taught that this planet, the people of this planet in all of its splendor was the fabrication of god and that everything in the universe revolved around us. Of course, all of that is nonsense but you clearly have to realise that there are many people that would be dumbfounded if alien beings were proven to exist. It would mean that we aren't god's [only] children and that... well.. most beloved creations. It would be devistating to the religious foundation, whether you care ot admit it or not.

Here's another ridiculous conspiracy theory for us. Have you heard the crap about aliens from a crashed UFO at Roswell? Your rant is hardly original and hardly sensible. There may be life on other planets not in our solar system, but the distances to other stars are insurmountable. The nearest stars next to our Sol or Sun are the three in the Alpha Centauri group that are over 4 light years away. No material object can travel anywhere near the speed of light, so it'd take many years for ET's from Proxima Centauri planets to reach earth. Do you think beings capable of achieving that would behave as stupidly as the tales have them doing and hover around for decades or centuries without anyone being able to prove it for certain? What lies were told about Iraq? Can you prove it? Why not spend your time on more useful activities than worrying about ET's whose existence cannot be proven and silly conspiracy theories?

In response to the comment from
UH YEAH
Why do you assume any "religious" person would not accept alien life forms as real?
Do you not think it very arrogant to assume that in this HUGE universe, created by God, that he should only put5 intelligent life onto 1 tiny insignificant planet?
I reckon there are loads of inhabited planets, we just do not know where they are yet. Probably better for them if we don't.
Oh and in answer to the original question, No I do not think the government would keep the people informed of ANYTHING important.

If I was Uncle Sam...I wouldn't tell anyone..Some people would panic, There be pandemonium in the streets. Some people would even probably commit suicide ,there aren't a lot of strong-minded people out there..Besides why would alien visit us..their technology has to be much more superior than ours..

We would know. Because the aliens would be more advanced. So they'd figure Right away the governments were not the people they wanted to contact. They would seek out Nobel-prize winning authors, scientists and peace activists, and other pro-eminent and benevolent people and let themselves be known through them.

Aliens, dont exist. Well not in any meaningful way.
The truth always has a habit of finding its way out, so if there way alien life we would know about it.
To answer your question, they wouldnt, but I would be more worrried if they said there was, as it means they are hiding something far worse!!!

Well......said Alberto, you're one from a set of triplets.
If no-one told you that until today, then why would the government tell you about the aliens?
