You can have abnormal pap smear for variety of reasons. If you have any localised infection of your genital tract, it can mimic changes of a cancer. It also depends in which part of your menstrual cycle the smear has been taken.
There is no need to be concerned if you have one atypical smear. Just chill out and go for your repeat smear. In most of the women, the repeat smear comes as normal.
Even if the repeat smear comes as abnormal, feel happy that it has been detected early. Follow the instructions of your gynaecologists religiously. There are many treatment options available now (LLETZ, Conisation) which can declare you cancer free!

It could be just an infection or it could be dysplasia (sp). I had dysplasia when I was pregnant with my daughter...and yes it was something they watched very closely and as soon as my daughter was born I had a coninization (sp) (where the took a cone shaped piece out of my cervic). I had to have a pap every 6 months for a while / then I just go once a year.

I have had one before. It turned out to be nothing, just a bad sample that didn't work right in the lab.

Just go back to the doc and get another one. Stressing out about it isn't going to help.
