Hi, my husband and I are coming out to Texas next week to visit friends but there doesn't seem to be a lot to do in Austin for sightseeing. If you live there can you tell us about hometown stuff that may not be on the web or advertised?
Thanks,
Joann from FL

Are you kidding me? Cruise the Texas Hill Country and shop/eat along the way. Devil's Back Bone, Gruene, Wimberly, Canyon Lake, San Marcos. Tour the state capital, Bob Bullock Museum and others; Alamo is less than a hour drive away, cave walks. Go to an I Max movie, party on 6th Street, go to an Austin City Limits concert (last week Tom Petty and Willy Nelson), go tubing' down a river, skinny dip in Lake Travis, go to a Long Horn's game. Be sure to go eat at Stub's Bar-B-Q. I'm sure you will love Austin once you get there. I could sit here all day and tell you things to go do up there but, if you did all these things I have already suggested then you would be there forever....never wanting to leave.
P.S. If you eat at Salt Licks call first...they have "special rules". Also pack everything from bikini to winter coat, and flip flops to boots. The Monarch Butterflies will be migrating through there during October.

Go to the Congress St bridge and watch the Bats swarm! They should be still migrating for the next few weeks, so you should get quite a show! Go there a little before dusk and it's truly amazing.

I love Austin, what a great city. Stubb's BBQ is right in town, but I recommend County Line BBQ which is out in the hill country, by Lake Austin. I was just down in Austin about a month ago and enjoyed it so much I can't wait to go back.

At night you can just cruise 6th St., downtown, because it's loaded with live music venues. I like the Continental. Stubb's also has live music along with the great BBQ.

If it's still hot out, go to the Barton Springs pool, a spring-fed pool that stays 68 degrees - COLD, but good for you and refreshing. Ziker(?) park is a beautiful park for you to walk or run in as well, and you can rent boats or canoes to take on the river.

You will NOT be bored in Austin, one of the best places in the US, and I have picky standards, being from NYC. Hope you have fun!

Of course there is all types of bar b q places to eat...Rudy's is pretty good...the Salt lick is just south of Austin and it is real good too. Sixth street for bands and partying.

Lots of antiques around town, and the food is great and plentiful.
