Seriously, I see nothing wrong with the Warrantless Wiretap Bill, if it makes us safe, then why not. If it bothers you so much, then what do you have to hide?

How does wiretapping make you safe from the CIA?
They are the real terrorists, and have succeeded in pulling the wool over the eyes of so many Americans
You could help yourself by doing some research into the bigger picture regarding The Patriot Act.
Why have 600 prison camps been buiol;t around America, and are staffed and waiting for inmates?

The question in my opinion is not what does one have to hide, but why feel like you would need to.
Self incrimination.
The problem is that everyone likes their privacy and freedom.
Some day, when the only rights one has is the rights that government decide to give, IE.. the right to sex only if your married, or else God forbid, take away the right to have a good cigar with your cognac, then if you mention these things on the phone, or in your mail( mail will be monitored soon) then your rights to self would be infringed, and become evidence against yourself.
Which I might add right now is still illegal.
You cannot be made to give self incrimination without a jury of your peers stating that you do not have the right to privacy, and person.
If we allow the groundless searches of phone conversations, we WILL lose the right to other privacies as well.

Listen, I'm in favor of limited wiretaps, just not unlimited warrantless ones. The reason so many people strongly oppose this, is because they feel it is infringing upon their rights. They are, in effect, undergoing a search without a warrant. It would be like your local police breaking down your door and searching your house without a warrant. I don't think you'd like that?

Others object to it because they question where the government will draw the line on this. Warrantless wiretapping? Warrantless physical searches? Random detentions? Secret police? the list continues. We're heading down a slipperly slope of sacrificing our freedoms for security. If not our rights, freedoms and liberties, what else makes this country great?

The Warrantless Wiretap Bill is a waste of time and a convenient distraction from the problem of co-operation between under-funded departments.

The departments that were supposed to provide security failed with the amount of information they already had, of which they had plenty. Allowing them access to more information is NOT the answer. It'll be like throwing good money after bad. Spend the time and money on providing high quality equipment, training and personnel.

Front line staff are plenty motivated, but are under-funded because their funds are used up by bureaucrats on wasteful bills. Waste less money on bureaucrats, especially politicians.

I have nothing to hide. But I have a piece of paper called the Constitution which says "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated" ans also "no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized". That secures my privacy and yours. The government will have to be a little more creative than the terrorists to catch them. Invading my privacy is not the answer.

I have nothing to hide but place a high premium on privacy. It was hastily cobbled together and is flawed in the way that leaves it wide open to be abused & not really be able to protect us in the way that it is set forth. We need safety checks and balances, not wholesale peeking. I've got clean underwear but i still don't want anyone going through my drawers (no pun intended) unless they've got a good reason.

Only the Republicans appease terrorists. Bush said he didn't care about catching Osama bin Laden! He just wants to start wars in every country that has oil! He has ignored North Korea, who has nukes, while trying to foment a war in Iran, who, according to the IAEA (who are supervising the Uranium enrichment and say that the enrichment is only being done to the level neccesary for energy production) has shown that they are not trying to make them....but now they want to because the US is planning to invade! Bush ignored the Genocide going on in Sudan, since there is no oil there. He ignores the Genocide in Congo. He only invades countries with oil, period!

Don't you realize that the official definition of "terrorist" by this administration includes anyone that doesn't agree with them? Don't you realize that the bulk of the warrants applied for from the FISA court by this "president" are to spy on activist groups in the US? It's not about having something to hide...it's that these people want to be able to imprison anyone that doesn't agree with them...and that may be you someday as they keep getting more radical and more fascist!

The FISA court has only ever denied 5 requests...and those 5 just needed to be re-worded, and then they were accepted. They don't even have to request the warrant until they have been at it for 72 hours! There is no reason to circumvent the FISA court unless you have something to hide...something that even the FISA court wold not accept...something that the American people would be upset about if they knew, so they want to keep secret!

If you have nothing to hide, go ahead and post your name, address, phone number, medical records, financial information, employment history, etc. on the Web for all to see.

C'mon, do it.

And you won't mind if I come by your house and go poking through all your personal belongings, right?

After all, you've got nothing to hide....

The whole purpose of our Constitution is to place limits on the power of our government. One of the ways we do that is to require that law enforcement authorities obtain warrants based on probable cause before delving into our personal stuff.
(I won't bother quoting Franklin, as I usually do in response to questions like this one, because Dave (above) has already done so admirably.)

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"

That is how a Benjamin Franklin publication put it in the early days of our republic. It is even more true today.

Without Communists to scare you, the Republican party desperately needs terrorists. They will leave nothing to chance in their attempts to make sure the world is a scary place for you and your children.
