Your question overgeneralises, but there is a lot of anti-Western feeling in the Muslim world and there are a variety of reasons for it. One is that many are very devout and see the west and decadent and immoral - I have some sympathy for this view. Another is resentment over the fact that during the Golden Age of Islam the Arabs led the world in scientific and medical advancement, but they have since fallen far behind and would now be nowhere without the God-given oil, extracted using technology introduced by western countries like BP. Excluding oil, the whole Muslim Middle East exports less than Denmark. They resent the fact that a civilisation they regard as inferior should have surpassed them so decisively.

As well, traditionally the West is least popular in Arab countries which have nominally pro-Western governments (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, pre-revolutionary Iran). Pretty much all Muslim (or Moslem - both are correct, Jasper's Mom) governments repress their people, and they encourage anti-western feeling as a release valve. People can't criticise the government in, say, Egypt, so the press is allowed and encouraged to spew bile towards the West. However America and Britain in particular now have far fewer friends in the Muslim world than they did before 2003 because of Bush and Blair's bone-headed invasion of a Muslim country which posed no threat to the West and had had nothing to do with 9-11.

Reverse the question. Why do westerners go trekking off to all points east and then try to impose western customs on the local people? Not very successful actually. I've yet to find a traditional fish 'n chip cafe or restaurants specialising in Yorkshire pudding east of Felixstowe.

Well, most do not hate the West. There are a few extremists, who most followers of Islam probably wish would go away. The Muslims in the West are happy there because of the freedom they have to live as they choose.

Historically, Islam has been incredibly tolerant of other faiths. I think some Muslims find western politics towards their countries as cold and uncaring. I think many of them realize that there are many excellent educational and business opportunities is the west, though. That's why they want to go to the west.

I think that some Muslims are bitter and want to have it all. That fact is that the world is a very different place to what it was thousands of years ago and people and women especially have grown and developed in to something to which religion cannot control. We are too knowledgeable for the naivety of religion these days and the sooner these extremists realise it the better. Why cant they just progress and diversify their religion, after all religion only exists because of people.

Muslims do not hate the westerns, they just don't like the government and the people who attack their homes and countries, and I'm not gonna lie, some people over react, but I'm a Muslim and I am really interested in answering your question, we like to live there cause we really like the countries, we do, my dream is to study in either America, UK, or Canada, so if you ask any Muslim about this question, an 11 year old child could answer it, just like me!

This is indeed a tough question.
I suppose they got out of the middle east to avoid the harsh life there. They want to establish their way of life in a place which already has prosperity established by others.
Its not too positive a mindset is it?
