d. And this is something that you should be able to recognize intuitively. Think about the meaning of the standard deviation, and how it relates to the spread of the data. If you are still having trouble, you can apply the formula yourself (σ=√(∑((x-μ)²) / n)). The standard deviation of a is 1/2, the standard deviation of b is 0, the standard deviation of c is 0, and the standard deviation of d is 2/√6.

"A" has a range of 1 (0,1) .... b&c has a range of zero (all elements have the same value / no deviation).... d has a range of 2 (from -1 to 1) and therefore has the largest SD.

if all the elements are the same ... the average is equal to the mean ... no deviation

the larger the range or spread from the mean...the larger the SD because it measures the distance from the mean by squaring the difference between the two numbers (mean - value)^2

You get the highest and the lowest number from each group and you subtract them:

For a: 1 - 0 = 1
For b: -1 - (-1) = -1 + 1 = 0
For c: 1 - 1 = 0
For d: 1 - (-1) = 1 + 1 = 2

The highest result being 2, you conclude that the answer is d)
