Playa del Carman is very nice, there's a ton of stuff to do, really. My wife and I have been there a bunch of times and there's still stuff we want to see and do.
In PDC there's lots of shopping, bars and restaurants along 5th avenue. At night, some of the bars and restaurants will have entertainment, things like mariachis or even a Mayan show.
About a ½ south are the ruins at Tulum, they are nice but small. There's lots of ruins all over the area, (including some very small ones in PDC itself), there will be tours to the bigger sites further away, Chichen Itza (2.5-3hrs away, Coba (1hr away), Ek Balam (2hrs).
You can take the ferry to Cozumel, it's about 30 minutes or so and cost $9 (maybe more now) for more shopping, bars and snorkeling & ruins (again smaller ruins but they are there).
There is diving and snorkeling both in the Carribean sea and in cenotes. Snorkeling in cenotes is pretty amazing.
Beaches are very nice.
You can take the bus or the colectivo (sp?) to Cancun pretty cheap and do some more shopping. You can likely find a tour bus to take you to Cancun (and back) at night if you want to party at some of the larger night clubs.
Assuming you land at the Cancun airport, there will be people handing out magazines called "Cancun Tips". Ask for the Mayan Riviera edition, it will have lots of information on things to do plus coupons, maps, history etc.
If you are a member of Sam's club, bring your card there is a Sam's club there and they sell tequila and beach stuff cheaper than the shops on 5th avenue.

In recent years Playa del Carmen has grown from a very small town with four paved streets to a small city today. Playa del Carmen sits in the middle of the Riviera Maya, and therefore has easy and fast access to everything from Punta Sam (Cancun) to Tulum. Additionally, the ferry to Cozumel loads and discharges passengers at Playa del Carmen. Although Playa del Carmen is nowhere near the size of Cancun (or even the hotel zone in Cancun) it offers some of the most beautiful accommodations, and beaches anywhere in the Caribbean.
The entire length of the Riviera (125 miles, or so) is dotted with places to see and things to do. If your a food lover you can't go wrong staying in Playa del Carmen, but for internationally acclaimed gourmet dishes you can't beat Cancun. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing are the regions claim to fame. The list goes on and on; much to much to go onto here. Look up the Riviera Maya and/or Playa del Carmen on the web.

there's a lot! You can swim with dolphins there, sight see, and lets not forget getting super tanned on the beach drinking tequila! This may sound crazy too, but for a great tan while in that sun w/out burning too bad, use corona (its so cheap there) seriously put corona on you and you get a golden tan and no burn. Here's their web site for more info and stuff you can sign up for- Have fun!
