If I will be pregnant, this will affect me, wont it? My boss really smokes a lot, and till the 6th or 7th month I would like to work.

Where I work is actually a flat with 3 rooms. The bosses room is next to mine, and he often leaves the door open.

And the door of my room has been removed before they hired me, so that he doesn't have to open it so many times...

I totally agree with the first answer. Even if you weren't pregnant you would have every right to ask your boss not to smoke around you and he'd have to put out the cigirette when he's inside talking to you.
If he's stubborn it might be tough, but I would certainly talk to your boss. Let him know that you would apreciate it if he would smoke in a designated area.. Like outside, and be sure not to smoke around you. At the same time don't go around him when he's smoking. If he says you need to talk let him know he needs to put out he smoke and then you'll talk.
Remember this:
He can't fire you for being pregnant
He can't fire you for wanting to be in a smoke free envronment.
I can already tell that you're on the right track to being a good mom simply because you want a healthy baby.
Good Luck!!

Yes, this WILL effect you and the baby. Second hand smoke is VERY dangerous for you and the baby.
Aside from being pregnant, you have the right to work in a smoke free work place. Address this with your boss. If this is a small, private company, you might not have any leverage. You might need to quit to find a job in a smoke free work place. Do no endanger your baby. Tell your boss you need a smoke free workplace, as you don't want to die from cancer from his smoking habits. See if he will set up a smoking area someplace away from where folks work.

I can't recall where I read this, because I quit my waitressing job at a restaurant that had a smoking section due to this. But I recall that the infant absorbs the majority of the second hand smoke. I was a little late in quitting my job and my son hand lung problems (not necessarily due to this, or it can't be proven) that he eventually grew out of.
I wouldn't take the risk. I find that odd that there are still places in the US that you can smoke in the work place.

Convey your concerns to him, and request politely that he do not smoke in your presence. If he does not give in, then you must stay as far as possible, at all times, which though troublesome, might help your baby not get affected. Also, if you did have the means and the opportunity, I suggest you look for someother job, that is if your boss refuses to make amends.
:: Chill, you must not think too much, for stress hurts the baby too..

I thought most every place had no smoking rules nowadays.
Baby or no baby--I could never be around someone smoking at work. I would complain and if it didn't work I would complain to his boss, and go on up the ladder.................
If all else fails, act like you're having health problems from it.
Seems like there are laws that state employers have to provide you with a safe working environment. If someone smokes around you they are endangering your health. No one should have to be subjected to that at their place of employment.

How close do you work to your boss??? I would maybe discuss with him that you are considering conception and would like to know if he would be willing to smoke in a more ventalated area or outside. Talk to him about your concern, he will probably respect it if he's a good business man/boss.

You know, it seems to me that you are over reacting a bit. Lighten up. Is this your first? I wouldn't go and demand that my boss stop. It isn't going to hurt the baby. I promise. as long as you aren't the one smoking, and you would like to keep your job, let it go. Get him a smokeless ashtray or something, but remember, he is your boss. All this, you have every right to blah blah blah. The boss doesn't have to do anything except fire you. Don't listen to those people. Ask yourself, who owns this probelem? Me? Well, then I have to make a decision if I cannot stand the smoking and that means I quit! Know what I mean? It won't hurt you or your baby. I promise.

I would make it a point to discuss this with him/her. Ask them to not smoke around you. Plus if you work in a public building then I do not think that they are allowed to smoke inside.

I'm surprised he still smokes in the workplace as most places have banned it. Depends in what environment you work I suppose however I would think telling him what you think would be ok..if he's any sort of decent individual he can nip outside for a cig break.
