I know this is a silly question, but if a fly is flying in mid~air, can you "knock it out" with a fly swatter or does it just keep flying?(I couldn't think of anything else more clever to ask today(lol).

Yes.
I've actually done this:

Catch a fly in your hand (sweep him from behind- flies always jump backwards when they take off) Then throw him hard at the floor. He'll be stunned for a few minutes. In that time, take a long hair, and tie it around his neck. When he wakes up, you'll have a fly on a leash. Oh, the fun you can have...

It might take a few tries, but it's not as hard as it seems.

Yes. A fly can be temporarily knocked out, but the force between killing and knocking out is so minute that you can't control it. Save the flies!

yes he will lie on the ground for a while and then he will take off again. it works if you hit it hard enough in the air

I have...and I've actually caught flies with my hand and shaken them and let them go...funny.
I did that with a mosquito that was buzzing on my hear...I hate that.
