I remember, as a youngster, my father and my uncle used to talk about waking up at night with terrible leg cramps. The women, in the family, decided that women suffer from stomach cramps and men suffer from leg cramps. At that time, my uncle told my dad about an over-the-counter product called "Chloraform Linament" and they both agreed that this product worked very well. They have since discontinued "Chloraform Linament."

Now that I am in my 50's I find that I am waking up in the night with leg cramps.

Is this a problem that other men have experienced and if so are there any over-the-counter products that can be recommended?

Two things I found can help: the first is to place a bar of soap (not Dial or Dove) between your mattress (or mattress pad) and bottom sheet. There is no explanation as to how or why this works but it does. The other solution I found (and it should only be used at night) is Legatrin PM - an over the counter product. Before Legatrin added the sleep inducer, I would use it (one pill a day is all) if I woke up in the middle of the night with cramps and they would be gone by the time I crawled back in bed. Now that I know about the soap, I don't use anything else. Several people, skeptics included, have tried the soap and were amazed by the results. By the way, women suffer leg cramps too!

You could be low on potassium or calcium. Drinking tonic water helps cramps. If it is really bad and won't go away, see a doctor. If you are on birth control, you could have a blood clot.

I am your age and had the same problem. Now, I know this is going to sound a little crazy... but get a bar of ivory soap, unwrap it and slip it between the sheets near your feet. A friend told me this and I thought she was nuts but I was so desperate that I tried it anyway and it really works. Good luck!:)

Bananas work real well, or just try getting more potassium from some other foods. If you ask a pharmacist he/she may be able to lead you in the right direction.

Try Deep Heat cream or spray. It's excellent.

you don't need a pull. I hate how Americans cure diseases with pills all the time...

There is NO MAGICAL PILL(S) that will give you everything you need ...

try quinine containing tonic water before going to sleep. remember, quinine can rarely cause anemia in some suceptible people.
