Sometimes used as hair dye in the past, there is actually a substance called boot black (may be one word).

It is possible... but not very easily if your looking for something permenant.

When leather is dyed a particular color, that color dye is 'imbedded' into the cells of the leather itself. Then the same color leather polish is then used to 'reinforce' the longevity of the color and to add protection from scuffs and scrapes. In order to 're-dye' the leather, you must first remove as much of the external polish as possible which can be difficult to do with out harming the leather. Even after you do that, you have still have a leather base that has soaked in the original color that you cannot remove. Adding an additional dye to the boots will take in some places ok and not ok in others. You can then follow with a boot polish that is of the same color as the dye. These process will yeild a decent result about 85% of the time.

So... yes it can be done... but your running 15 to 20% risk of ruining the boots and I would expect a less than satisfactory results. You can bring your boots to a shoe/boat repair place and ask them to do it. However, I think you'll find that the cost to change the color is only slightly less than the cost to buy a pair already in the desired color.

Woolworth's do a range of leather and suede shoes dyes in different colours.

The suede dye is relatively simple as the dye soaks into the nap without any effort.

The leather dye is a bit different.. It comes in a kit with a little "buffer" where you slightly roughen the boot so that the dye can bond to the material. The dye is thicker so when you paint it onto the boot..it smooths the leather again.

Leave to dry then polish as normal.

As its boots your colouring, you may need a couple of the kits as I believe one kit is sufficient for one pair of shoes.

dying them permanently is a tough job. In fact dying leather well is difficult. Look for a tailor or shoemaker or some company that dyes leather. Its not cheap and depending on how old the boots are you may want to consider buying a black pair.

Dyeing leathers is a specialist job and white to black would be difficult. I would suggest yellow pages and see if there is somebody in your area who will dye leather. I am not sure about the people who colour wedding shoes and they do not need to use deep colours like black but you could ask them

Dylon do a shoe dye, so it is possible. I have done shoes and boots in the past. Finding the dye is quite hard maybe shoe repairers sell it, do read the instructions, it can go everywhere and the won't be 100% as good as they were before, but at least you willl be able to wear them!!

Go to your local hardwear store, they should have loads of dyes. They will probably be able to give you some tips on how to do it properly too. Instructions are on the packet, but everyone has a tip to tell you.

you can't dye lether boots they will just rub off in a while and you will have to get it done over and over again and it will cost you a bomb trust pursides if you do get them dyed they will rub off and you will look like a total idiot with some of your boots white and some of your boots black you will sertainly look stupid
