My grandaughter Rreiawna is 7 weeks old the first few weeks she was breast fed and tolerated breast milk very well. Well we put her on formula and she began to spit it up. We have tried her on goodstart, enfamil lipil, and recently isomil advance the over all outcome: major throwing up this isn't spit up it flies out her mouth. I put her on evaporated can milk (like I did for Rreiawna's mom she also wasn't able to drink formula) just to see and she keeps it down very little spit up and NO THROWING UP could it be she's allergic to the iron or something in the formula?

I have tried her on both milk base and soy based formulas with no luck, she still throws up. I know evaporated can milk isn't healthy enough for her and her dr has tried different formulas.

Sounds exactly like what we went through with our little guy. He is now a year old. We started with similac, then to enfamil, then to good start, then all of the soys, then alimintim... well finally ellecare is the answere (dr prescribed, hypoallergeinic and has all the vitamins he needs)
Have you thought about seeing a gi specialist? The baby could have reflux, my son has severe reflux on top of all of it, and also required an adult dose of prevacid to keep it all down.
othere advice would be to thicken her formula with rice cereal, the gi doc and pediatrician will have you do that to keep her from spitting up so easily
this is a very serious situation, the more she spits up, coughs, and throws up the chances of her aspirating some food in her lungs is high! and will cause all kinds of respiratory ailments including pnemonia, and reactive airway problems. In two of carsons bronchs it showed that he even though we thought he wasnt' spitting up with soy milk was aspirating... it just took a scope in the lungs to prove it.
I fired a gi doc to finally get a peace of mind, and he put him on the ellecare we spent the first 4 months of his life in childrens hospital for these feeding issues and it comes down to severe reflux (the only way to prove refulx is ph probe study and endoscopy of the stomach) harsh test but well worth finding out before your granddaughter gets really sick, respiratory season is among us.
I am also a respiratory therapist
please try to get her into a gi docs office, if you live near east tn I can recomend the best of the best, also there is a gi specialized hospital in clevland ohio, my sons doc was about to send him there if the ellecare didn't work, his weight is below the 5th percentile due to all of his feeding issues, and almost considered failure to thrive..
it takes a hard head to stand up to the pediatricians... I have been there... being a respiratory therapist I knew that I could hire and fire at will, and I kept on til we found the problem and fixed it.....
if ellecare hadn't worked, we would have had to have the banding surgery, and that is still not totally out of the option list still...
good luck.. email me if you need some numbers or advice

She is very likely allergic to something in the formula. There are many other formulas you can try. THe brand isn't the important thing. The ingredients are.
Try a soy based formula and see how that works out.
You can't feed her just on evaporated milk. You need the added nutrients in the baby formula if you can't continue with th breast milk diet.
The best solution is to continue to breast feed for at least another few months.

take your baby to the doctor evaporated milk is NOT healthy for her. Can your daughter use a breast pump so you can feed the baby that way? formula isn't the best choice. The doctors will be able to tell you what to do about the baby not eating right, but don't give her anymore evaporated milk! If you don't do something soon your baby will not gain enough weight and will then be subjected to things like learning delays and what not.

Never hesitate to call the doctor. She may have all sorts of different issues. Some kids have to have soy, lactose free, or other types of formula.
Breast milk is different for every baby. Your breast makes the perfect milk for the child that is nursing. Formula can be very harsh on a baby's tummy. I supplemented with my daughter, and now she has life long intestinal issues. I only gave her one bottle a day, and that did it.
I hope the doctor helps.

Have her checked to see if she suffers from Reflex-all my kids did.
The throwing up is like water coming out of a fountain-kind of like the girl in the exorcist movie!
I had to put a little cereal in their formula-just enough to make it pureed looking, hold them or sit them up for 30 after feeding, and put head of their cribs higher than the foot end. All of these things were told to me by their doctor. Also, my grandson suffered from the same thing and was told these exact things to do.
Ask her doctor. Evaporated milk isn't really that good for them. Of course, my mom used that on me when I was a baby-a long time ago.

Could be---I know they have Iron-free formula out there. A friend of mine tried everything and her baby would actually get horrible rashes until she went to the iron-free. It is very expensive though!! Try checking with the pediatrician's office first to see if they maybe have a sample you can try before you spend more on formula you won't use. Good luck!

There is a type of formula (Similac Alimentum) that is a hypoallergenic formula that has proteins already broken down for infants with a sensitivity. It is supposed to be gentler on the stomach. Maybe this could be the solution. Although I think it is more expensive than the regular stuff. Hope this helps.

CALL A DOCTOR. I really need to just save this speech somewhere.
WHILE ALL OF US ON YAHOO ANSWERS ARE WELL MEANING AND WANT TO GIVE YOU THE BEST POSSIBLE ANSWERS WE CAN THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO SPEAK TO A DOCTOR ABOUT. CHANGING FORMULA IS ONE OF THESE THINGS. YOU SHOULD NEVER SWITCH FORMULA WITHOUT CALLING THE CHILDS PEDIATRICIAN FIRST.
When starting a new formula you need to give the baby a chance to adjust to it. Trust meif you eat the same thing at every meal for a few weeks and the suddenly switch to somethng different your stomach might rebel. Itss the same for a baby. Please don't make this child suffer, call someone with a MD after their name and see what they suggest.

when i took my babies from breast to bottle we had a lot of days being sick :( i asked my health visitor and was told its not unusual for baby to find it hard to tolerate at the start. thankfully a few days and the baby was fine. maybe she is drinking the milk to fast and u could try a slower teat on the bottle. i hope she gets better soon x x x

Flies out of her mouth? I think I did that when I was that age (I would be on one side of the room and it would fly out and hit the wall on the other side of the room..seriously). I was allergic to milk and they had to put me on Acidophilus, maybe try that. It stopped the vomiting thing and I was good to go after that. Good luck and God bless.
