This morning I found that my huge new Sam's Club bottle of laundry detergent fell off the shelf and exploded all over the laminate floor in my laundry room. Now I have 1/2 inch of detergent all over my floor. What is the best way to tackle this kind of mess?

I would use bleach. You can scrub and scrub with water or other detergents but it's still going to be slick because laundry detergent is such a strong base (high pH). So you need something to strip it off.

Scoop up as much as possible -- I'd use something semi flexible (strong paper/thin cardboard, one of those disposable cutting boards), and scoop up the liquid and pour it back in the bottle. Slightly dirty detergent is still perfectly usable. Wipe up whatever you can't scoop away with towels (or paper towels) -- DO NOT use water until you have nearly all of the detergent up. Once you have all the detergent possible off the floor go ahead and mop it -- it might take several moppings for all the detergent to come up. Be careful your floor will be slick.

Good Luck!

This will not be an easy job. I had a whole box of POWDERED laundry detergent spilled (by my kids) once. Even though it was powdered, I STILL had to mop over and over again.
MY suggestion is just to use a dust pan to scoop up as much as possible. I would just dump it in the tub. You probably won't have any more choice than I did about the mopping part.
GOOD LUCK!!

I would do what leelyn said to do just wipe the soap up with youre dirty laundry then throw it in the washer. Then after I would grab the mop and start moping up whatever is left. Good luck and be carefull you dont wnat to slip and fall in that stuff.

You'll just have to dilute it with water, like from a wet mop, and it will probably take several times of changing your bucket of water. You can add white vinegar to the water, that should help a lot.

Do you have any dirty clothes? I would clean the soap with them and then throw them in the washer. Do you have any blankets or towels that need washed? Would be a way to use the soap up...This happened to me to many times...I buy the power...you can just swept it up!

I would scrape up as much as possible with a dust pan, that is if it has begun to harden. After that wash the rest, if you have a shop vac that can suck up wet try that.

scoop up as much as you can and place in bucket and use a dry towel to wipe up what's left and then use a mop to get up the remainder of what's left so it doesn't feel sticky.
