I think in the business world it is rude, unless you have your own private office. Some things that the speaker says is for the listener only, not to be shared around. The speaker does not always know they are on speaker.

On the other hand, in a person's home...my aging father has to turn the phone on speaker to get it loud enough he can hear. It is annoying because when I talk to him I can hear the TV and everything else. I put up with it because I know that is the only way he can hear me.

They think (key word here is think) that they are important when in fact, they are insecure and need an ego boost! That's why they put it on speaker so everyone else can hear them actually having a conversation! It's sooo funny. I had a boss like that, too. What a dumb butt.

I find it VERY irritating !...And I'll tell whoever I'm talking to to take me off of the dam thing. It makes it hard to understand what they're saying, not to mention that everyone around them can hear what I'm saying !!!
If someone wants to talk to ME, then call ME ! It doesn't have to be publicized, and they don't need to be talking to other people in the room either Gawd ! Ya never know who's talking to who !!

If they need to keep their hand free, they need to use an earphone/microphone. If it's a conference call, then it needs privacy (usually it's hard to hear when there's background noise)... otherwise it borders on one-up-man-ship and snobbery.

They are too busy to lift the receiver and talk. Doing too many things at one time. It really annoys me!

They are annoying and arrogant. No one wants to hear their conversations anymore than the conversations of those Nextel phone idiots!!!!
