The only way to actually stop the problem of terrorism is to stop that which is fueling the ideology. Terrorism is an ideology, not a country, or even a people. The only way to stop an ideology is to prove it wrong. The belief behind terrorism is that these people (specifically Arabs) are being oppressed by the western nations and the only way to break that oppression and make something of oneself is to fight, and if needed die fighting these nations.
By using torture, removing the rights of the detained, and instigating wars that destroy these nations, we only strengthen this ideology. You can kill, torture, and imprison all the people you want, there will always be more terrorists.
The only way to truely defeat this ideology is to show these people that there is a better way to improve your situation than through violence, and to show that we aren't being oppressive. The only way to do that last is to take the moral high ground.
Thus:
No torture; that is only a tool oppressive regimes use to get people to say what they want (as opposed to telling the truth).
Actual trials; putting these criminals before a court and showing the evidence against them for all to see will show the true nature of these terrorists.
These are the things we need to work towards, not bigger bombs to kill more people. Not finding more countries to destroy. You cannot spread freedom with a gun, only a different form of oppression.

If you don't follow the law, what exactly is the difference between you and the terrorists???
America singed the Geneva Convention and is expected by international law to follow it.
America cannot just decide that if it doesn't suit the conflict it is in to just change it. The other country's that are part of it would need to agree.
As a member of the armed forces I need to know that I am not just a terrorist under a different flag.

Bush is a draftdodger, a wimp, and an appeaser. In Iraq and Afghanistan, he's trying ultraliberal nationbuilding, following the openly appeasing crowd's idea that every terrorist was born a good person who would have become sane if he had grown up in a free and prosperous society. There is nothing forcing us to cripple ourselves by following international law, or at least Congress can pass legislation withdrawing us from these unrealistic conventions.
When a Chickenhawk wraps himself in the flag, he is crossdressing.

We will win the war on terror by developing foreign policies that are based on integrity and respect for human dignity.
This will not happen in our lifetime, though, because there are too many riches to be gained by rapacity and overwhelming military force.
In the end, the American empire will be destroyed. Ask our buddies, England about their empire.

I was talking to my husband about this last night. I think if the rules are not being followed by the terrorist we should not follow them either. Its just as simple as that.
