Assumptions based on age - you have WinXp, your processor is over 21 G and you have at least 256M ram (if you have less, add more asap). The problem you are describing, assuming you meet the previous specs, are caused by spyware, adware, malware, etc. Use AdawareSe and Spybot to clean out the crap. You can also download Windows Defender. All 3 are free. Do a virus scan, you may have picked up a trojan. If you have added and deleted programs in the past (as many of us do) your registry may be full of problems as well. Don't try fixing that yourself, buy System Mechanic and run a registry scan.

Start it in safe mode, press f8 repeatedly after you power on. Select safe mode with networking. I would download Adaware, Ewido, cCleaner, AVG and whatever other scans you can think of and run them. Just besure and uninstall the antivirus programs you download and leave only your normal one. You've probably got a virus or spyware. If you can't seem to get the problem solved back up all your data and reload. It's the easiest option but it's also destructive. You will lose all of your data and programs that you have installed since you bought the computer. I definately reccomend the virus/spyware removal. If all else failes bring it to a retail location such as Geek Squad. They charge to remove it but if you really need the data and computer then it's worth it.

Run a full virus scan with updated virus software. Dell usually includes a 3 month trial, so make sure you have something that has not expired.

Then go to www.ewido.net and click on their online scan to get rid of spyware

then go to start, run type in msconfig in the box, click the startup tab. Everything that is check is running at bootup time and keeps running. Uncheck things you don't need or dont recognize.

That will definately help

The best and effective way is to backup essential data from that laptop to a CD/DVD/ext. hardisk then completely formatting the hardisk and installing a fresh OS.

The source of the problem could be a worm. If the above mentioned method is not preferable by you, you need a good anti-virus software and techniques to remove the worm.

You could 1st try scanning with an online anti virus scanner.

Usually, starting up and shutting down time depends on the amount of processes. I advise you to goto start menu > run > msconfig . Then, click on the startup tab. There, u will see a list of programs that runs everytime you start up your computer. Uncheck as many as possible, thus disabling many programs. Then, when you are done click apply and restart. Hope this helps!

Scan it for viruses. After you make sure it's clean, stop any unnecessary programs from starting when your computer starts.
Next, delete any unnecessary file from the hard drive the swap file is on.
If all these won't solve your problem, back-up the files you want to keep and format the drive the operating system is on and reinstall it. Now reinstall the drivers for the devices you use. This should solve the problem for sure

First get online, go to tools, then internet options, then go to temp files and delete cookies and delete files, then go to history and clear it, set the number of day for history at 3 days.

now go to www.stopzilla.com and download stopzilla free trial and let it clean all the worms, virus, bugs and keyloggers from you computer, this should speed your computer up after stopzilla is finished, remember this program is a 15 day free trial and if you want to keep the protection you will need to purchase a key to from stopzilla.
If you need anti virus software try www.grisoft.com for a free version of AVG anti-virus protection, with this program and the Stopzilla your computer should be faster.

Good Luck,

1) delete temporary internet files, and any old data that you don't use.

2) defrag - maybe 2-3 times.

3) virus check - Norton or McAfee are good, but there are others. I have also heard of an online check at housecall.trendmicro.com, but have not tried it myself.

4) spyware check - spybot is one, adaware from Lavasoft is another. Both have free downloadable versions.
