From personal experience, I take a large gulp of some kind of fizzy drink then force a burp. This makes the muscles in your chest, throat and stomach stretch then relax whcih *should* cure the hiccups.

this really works ,a doctor advised my friends dad to do it,
fill a glass with water, stick a metal spoon in the glass, sip the water while leaving the spoon in the glass, as you sip the water, the spoon must touch the tip of your nose, apparently a small electric charge or something reacts and stops the hiccups,i know it sounds nuts but it does actually work.

The way I get rid of them (never fails)...hold your breath and take a big gulp of water at same time so you swallow lots of air. Always works if you do it twice. Apparently it relaxs the diaphram (the muscle inside you which causes hiccups.

get a large glass of water and take several gulps in a row from the far side if the rim. You will have to lean forward and over the glass as you do it. Feels stupid but you can feel it stretching different muscles in the throat.

Try this: Take a DEEP breath, force your abdomen out as far as you can, and hold it. Hiccups are a spasm in your diaphragm, and taking a deep breath while expanding your abdomen stretches your diaphragm. It may take you a couple of tries, but it really works.

Breathing into a paper bag- the smallish sort you might get a card in- no gaps between face and bag
Down a pint of water with your thumbs stuck in your ears, you might have to experiment a few times to get this right!

I learned this from a bartender and it has worked everytime for me and anyone else that has used it. Take a lemon and dip it in sugar. Pour bitters on the lemon and then bite down. Works instantly.

Simply holding your breath will not work, as (believe it or not) air escapes through your ears! Scuba divers are aware of this, as air pressure in the ears are why they have to 'equalize' through nipping their nose and blowing. Anyway... do these three things and hold for as long as possible. It has never failed me yet:
(a) Block your ears with your thumbs
(b) Block your nostrils with your middle fingers
(c) Hold your breath
