Some people have a mild fish-like odor and others have a strong, extremely offensive such odor. These people have a rare genetic disorder known as Fish Odor Syndrome. They have an odor no amount of bathing or perfuming will disappear. Although only about a hundred cases have been described in the scientific literature worldwide, the syndrome may not be as rare as that number suggests. Trimethylaminuria is only occasionally identified during childhood. Some cases of trimethylaminuria may have no genetic component: Several patients seem to have developed the disorder after liver or kidney disease.

Few health professionals are aware of this disease, which is called trimethylaminuria, people experiencing its characteristic body odor may spend years seeking relief. They often acquire a long list of inaccurate diagnoses, ranging from poor hygiene to psychiatric problems. Some may withdraw from the outside world to avoid ridicule or try to mask their odor with strong perfumes and cigarettes. Many report symptoms of depression. This syndrome can be highly destructive to a person's personal and social life as well as to work and career.

These people fail to metabolize trimethylamine and that this is the source of the fishy smell. It can be an enzyme deficiency produced by a genetically inherited condition. A secondary form of trimethylaminuria may result from the side effects of treatment with large doses of the amino acid derivative L-carnitine (levocarnitine). Foods containing carnitine, choline and/or trimethylamine-N-oxide are processed to trimethylamine and no further, causing a strong fishy odor. This secondary form of the disorder is a result of an overload of trimethylamine. In this case, there is not enough of the enzyme to get rid of the excess trimethylamine.

"Syn·drome n. A group of symptoms that collectively indicate or characterize a disease, psychological disorder, or other abnormal condition" - So yes, as the medical community defines it, it is a disease, not a condition you can change from outside of your body by washing more or using perfumes, etc.

LOL, that's really funny! When I first met my wife, she quickly developed this fishy smell. I was appalled! She went to the doc and they found that she had a tampon stuck up there from 1952! So, it might just be something as simple as that. Go in and have an exam. You could have some bacterial problem, but they can treat you for that easily enough. Don't worry, they can help.

A problem with the kidneys so I have been told. Must be awful! I used to know a very sweet old man who always smelled very strongly of fried onion rings. Wonder what that was....?
