South Africa is one of the renowned countries in the world, and that hurts to other countries who think fame is theirs. In defence, they will start hilighting every negetive aspect about South Africa, forgeting that the very same negetive aspects apply to their own countries. At leats we are not in denial because we can loudly say "Yes crime is rife in South Africa".

Now, try and make a comment about rife crime in USA or UK or Australia, and see the defensive answers flowing.

South Africa's crime fee, i be attentive to, is very just about mythical. the fact is, inspite of the incontrovertible fact that, which you would be able to desire to be secure adequate. it's going to in all probability be somewhat an adjustment - in SA, you have alarms, tall gates, and so on. I do notably recommend Cape city. It feels lots extra secure - no electric powered fences or guards patrolling the streets interior the suburbs, much less hijackings - and it extremely is quite mind-blowing. i could recommend quite STICKING to Cape city. whilst in comparison with, say, Johannesburg, it extremely is lots extra friendly for travelers. something that I even have observed after residing in the two a sort of places is that in the time of Cape city, the crime which you're maximum probably to bump into is a theft interior the path of the night. you will no longer additionally be wakened. although, in Joburg, the possibilities of being hijacked or mobbed are lots bigger for the properly-known person... despite if it is unquestionably a generalization. I say bypass forward with it!

Diesel, I don't necessairily agree with you on that one. :) I think that people here are going on and on about crime in SA because this is the SA section of Answers! There are plenty of other spots on this site where you will find people going on about how bad the crime is in major cities like New York, Washington DC, London, Sydney, but you're not going to find it here. I for one, having lived in Los Angeles, DC, and Johannesburg, would be the first to admit that there is crime everywhere, and that I know there are places where I will not go out alone. The types of crime is different, though my parents were more upset than I was that in Midrand we had panic buttons in case of an emergency! So yes, crime is everywhere, but realize that since we are in the SA section of Answers, you're going to find a lot of very unfortunate criticism on the country. But hey, let's ignore it together, and focus on what a beautiful country South Africa is, and how incredibly far it has come!

BECAUSE the A.N.C (ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE) Government?? is incompotent & uninterested in resolving the issue OR even facing the facts that CRIME is out of control, Like all Tinpot regimes, it has won the day made its money for a few leaders & thats that., AS long as crime does not hamper the money grab of the leadership what does again GOVERNMENT? care.
GO talk to POLICE in the street - if you find any and see how they feel about crime & working conditions as a result of crime.
I am from S.A & left because as a pale male I was NOT needed by the ANC & along with LOADS of people of all colours & creeds who saw CRIME rocket out of logical proportion I decided to leave for my familys safety & make a contribution to a civilised country...S.A will always be home but a home without a life is not life or home.

It is true that crime is everywhere but SA is the only country I know whose Embassy warns you from trying to explore the streets and alleys of major cities.. the advise in an almost demand to "Stick with your tour operator and NEVER wander out of the hotel on your own if you are a tourist". I heard this warning from the consulate officials upon issuiance of the Visa.

The reasons are mostly that:
The levels of violent crime are unparalleled anywhere else in the World.
Your Government do little about it except talk or tell those who complain to leave..
Your Police are mostly useless and in many cases corrupt.
Foreign visitors are often the target of your criminals and your Tourist Boards and Agencies are reprehensible in their behaviour in trying to disguise the dangers of the Country.
Of course their is crime in other Countries but you need to appreciate that the crime in South Africa is making it a mini war zone. Some of the crimes being committed ( child/baby rape, torture before murder etc) are so callous that they offend normal people and they feel the need to go Public with it. And is not just Brad- the Tourist Authorities of the US,Britain,Australia,Canada and New Zealand have all issued warnings to their citizens citizens about travelling there. So accept the criticism and do something about changing the circumstances instead of pointing fingers.

The crime in South Africa has become a very hot topic now that South Africa has won the bid to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup. That's probably the number one reason why people have been going on and on about it. I think that most foreigners are just jealous that an African country was awarded this awesome chance.

I dont know. True like you say S.A isn't the only one with crime. Let's compare just for a min. In America I can go to school and get shot by a pupil or molested by teachers where as in S.A sh*rt like that doesnt happen. Honestly I feel safer in S.A in Joburg which is the worst place then I do living in America.
