When is the best time to fertilize the yard?

I live in the state of Alabama and was wondering if fall or spring is best.

In the fall, you can fertilize for the winter. Most companies produce food that slow releases feed through the winter. Then in the spring, you can fertilize with weed n feed products, crabgrass products, volcanic ash, etc. Your best time will be March with preimmergent fertlilizers and then sometime in April/May when the warm weather comes around with weed and feed.
