They started using this about 10 years ago, the reason is because not everyone in this world are Christian. I lobbied to get it changed to BJR"B"D and AJR"B"D for Before JR "Bob" Dobbs and After JR "Bob" Dobbs.

CE (Common Era) was used as a replacement for AD (Anno Domini, or Year of Our Lord, meaning Christ) to avoid offending non-Christians.

Personally, I wasn't aware of any non-Christians who were offended by the use of AD, so I'm not sure how useful this has actually been.

Yes they mean the exact same thing. They changed it because AD had religious implications and CE simply means common era. They also changed BC to BCE.

By amazing serendipity, the 'common era' just happens to coincide with the year of Christ's birth. The Islamic world uses its own calendar dating from Mohammed - do you think they worry about what the Jews and Christians living in their lands think? Do they heck. I strongly suspect 'CE' weas created not in response to any pressure from non-Christians, but by people from Christian backgrounds trying to second-guess what they think religious minorities must be feeling. It's like pretending we would celebrate 'winterval' and exchange 'season's greetings' cards if it weren't Christmas.

I still use AD and am proud to do it.

a.d. = anno dominii the year of the Lord
the common era refers to the beginning of classification of time that most of the planet now uses in common. There are still many calendars in use which are not the Gregorian, but the Gregorian is the one that is common to the planet, like the English language is the international business language but there are still plenty of other languages in use
the us of c.e. is not to denigrate Christ, but to include everyone.
If you were Jewish, or Buddhist, or atheist, etc. would you want to explain to your kids why you refer to Christ? Would you want Christian icons in your home?
As a Christian, would you like to use the Jewish calendar, making this the year 5 thousand and something? How about the Chinese calendar, or an Aztec one?
no one is trying to "fool" anyone, just to be inclusive

? Who exactly do you believe people are trying to fool by using the term Common Era?

because AD means After Death (jesus death that is)(jk I just could rember the real name but it means year of our lord) so to be 'politicaly' correct they switched it for CE and yes they are fooling quite a few people...along with stateing the hypothis of evolution as fact.
