The New England states have been called by that name since long before they were states or there was a USA. They were called New England when the first English colonists came there in the 1600s. Massachusetts was started in 1620, and Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine, and New Hampshire were founded very soon after. Vermont is inland and has no seacoast, so it was not settled by English colonists until 100 years later.

The very furthest part of the Northeastern US, in the state of Maine, is sometimes called "Down East" - supposedly because when people were sailing from Maine to Boston and back, the winds always blew toward Maine. so the trip to Boston was hard, but sailing home was like going downhill, really easy.

Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine are collectively known as New England.

Inhabitants of New England are known as Yankees, although the baseball team of that name is located in New York which is not generally considered to be part of New England.
