This is an excellent rainy-day activity. It's a great way to entertain kids in a safe and fun mannor.
Ingredients:
2 Cups of Flour
2 Cups of Water
2 Tablespoons of Vegetable Oil
2 Tablespoons of Cream of Tarter
1 Cup of Salt
Food Coloring
Directions:
1) Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large sauce pan.
2) Add the food coloring to the water.
3) Mix the colored water and oil into the dry ingredients.
4) Cook on the stove on medium heat and stir constantly.
5) When it feels like stiff mashed potatos, take it off the stove and knead it for about 2 minutes.
6) Store it in something like a tupperware container or a zip-lock baggy when the kids are finished playing with it.
A Couple Notes:
The playdough is non-toxic, so its OK if they eat it, but its not going to taste great. So advice them not to taste it.
If the playdough gets on things like counters, carpet, couches, etc., then a little warm water will remove it if you do it immediatly. The carpeting and couches will be the most difficult to remove the dough, so try to avoid it from getting on there.
The dough will wash out of clothing, but food coloring will not if it is spilled directly on something and left there for more than a couple minutes.
This should only be done under supervision, the kids should not be doing it alone.
Baby Sitters- Always check with the parents before doing this. Also, try to supply the ingredients from your own home.

Found this recipe - if you want it to smell like the real stuff be sure to add a little vanilla.
Make Your Own Play-Dough
Play Dough Recipe
I used to make a batch of this play-dough once a month in the classroom. Changing the colors for the season. Although 20 little hands stayed busy shaping and molding, the play dough never dried out!
You'll need:
Flour 3cups
Salt 1 1/2 cups
Water 3 cups
Vegetable Oil 2TB.
Cream of tartar 1TB.
Food coloring few drops or unsweetened "Kool-Aid" 1pkg.
Mix ALL of the ingredients in a large saucepan.
Cook over medium low heat, until the dough comes away
from the edges of the pan and it becomes difficult to move the spoon. Remove from heat. Cool until it can be handled.
Place on counter or wax paper knead 3-4 times.
Store in an air tight container.
