If you don't mind the mess, kids love paper mache. Blow up a large balloon and cover with strips of newspaper dipped in flour and water glue. 3 layers should do it....any more than that will be too heavy and slide off. Let air dry for a couple of days and once dry and hard, pop the balloon gently and remove. Trim the top down until you have something like the shape of an open pumpkin. Paint orange and let dry. Now using a disposable foam brush, apply white glue in small sections and cover with orange crepe paper. Cut triangles from black crepe paper for eyes nose and mouth and glue in place. When dry, fill with candy, gum, whistles, toy bugs and other small trinkets. For a hanger, make 2 small holes opposite one another about 4" from the top and thread string through. Cover the opening at top with more orange crepe paper and you will have a Halloween pinata for them to share with friends. They can also make a Halloween candy bowl from paper mache using your largest mixing bowl turned upside down and covered in plastic wrap for a mold. Decorate like a Jack-o-Lantern and they will be proud they helped create the bowl that holds your Halloween treats.

Michael's craft store has plastic buckets and
fun foam shapes that your children can peel and stick to decorate the buckets. There are door hangers they can decorate as well.
