First, think about what the computer will be primarily used for. If you just need a computer for email, internet, and creating documents, it doesn't need to be top of the line. The Dell homepage offers a "Dimension Basic" for as low as $279.00. Be careful to look over the componets carefully though, because some models may need to be customized to be actually productive. The B110, for instance, only comes with 256MB RAM. Windows XP needs at least 512.
If you're not too picky, you can also look into refurbished models or used Dells from previous owners.
