Why do 14 year olds think they 'desperately need' cell phones??

Because the younger kids around them have them. I work at an after school program, and i have 2nd graders who have cell phones.......for what???? I dont know, but the age is getting younger and younger for cell phones. Have you seen the commercial for the Disney mobile phone......its for little kids!!! I dont know what's up with that. I guess they're just trying to fit in.

i know seriously! why do they want a cell anyway? either they're crazy about talking or they just want to show it off. haven't you people heard of PHONES?

Also they see that younger kids have them but they don't so they tell their mom: " BUT MOTHER, I DESPERATLY NEED!!! A CELLULAR PHONE!" they use the fancy language so their mothers think oh what a smart kid you are for a reward i'll give you a cell, but their moms really say "NO AND THAT'S THAT!" and the stupid 14 year olds go like BUT MOTHER, BUT MOTHER, ......
oh come on. Besides, the younger kids have them for emergencies and stuff like that, not for chatting with their bf.
so then the 14 year olds see that the 9 year olds have them and the 14 year olds think that the 9 year old's mother's gave thema cell to chat, not for emergencies, so they just go tell their mom stupid things like oh i need a cellphone, oh amanda has one why can't I, etc. and then their parents say no but the 14 year old just keeps going, ignoring everyone, blah blah blah. seriously. it's not annoying. it's way more than just annoying. If they want a cell, why don't they just use their own money? That's what my parents tell me. You want something, use your own money. You have the money and brought it, great, buy it. You didn't bring the money, tough luck, guess you'll have to wait until we come back next time. And i don't really care about using my own money because if you have, let's say, $500, and you wont use it, and you keep asking your parents for the money, why bother have the $500 if you ain't gonna use it? just give it to your parents if you aren't going to use it. if you 14 year olds want to buy a cell, use your own money. if you don't have any money, tough luck, you better start finding a way to get some cash fast.

because we like to text and talk to people, its not really desperately needed, but they are a fun and cool thing to have, it also teaches some responsibility. is parents get their 14 year old a phone, and they lose it, dont get them another one. its their fault and it will teach them to be more responsible


and it also helps when parents need to reach their kids. if you want it for that reason get the kid a pay as you go phone, or one of those new disney mobile phone where you can track where the phone is, so if the kid wants the phone you gonna know where hes at all the time

A cell phone may have recently saved the life of a girl taken hostage. In this day and age cell phones are a must and may prevent alot of criminal activity. Ask yourself this, if your son/daughter were in trouble would you not want them to have a way to call for help?

I didn't get my own cell phone until I could pay for it myself. My parents did however lend me theirs when I was going out with friends. This was for emergencies only. I could only use it to call 911 or home. It also allowed my parents to contact me if they were worried.

As a security feature, I think their great. But their not an accessory as most kids as using them nowadays.

because sooooo many parents of 14 year olds bought them cell phones so now they all MUST have one You know they have some great plans avail for kids. You can even know where they are at all times!

Because kids these days that's what they grow up with seeing there older cousins have one kids at school my little brother received his first cell phone when he was 12 and my cousin when she was 13 and i thought that was young and who in the world are they going to talk to but it turns out they wil talk to all there friends cuz they all have one..

I believe the majority of think they "need" them because everyone else has them. It seems as though individuality is losing it's grasp on today's youth.
