In 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was experimenting with electrifying a rarefied gas in a tube. As it began to get dark, he noticed that when he made sparks in the tube, a fluorescent screen on the other end of his bench glowed for a second. He theorized that something or other was traveling from the tube to the screen. He tried blocking that something with various objects and found that these "rays" traveled right through many items. He knew he had a ray of some sort but didn't know what it was. He called them X-Rays, because they were unknown.

A new form of radiation was discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Roentgen, a German physicist. He called it X-radiation to denote its unknown nature. This mysterious radiation had the ability to pass through many materials that absorb visible light. X-rays also have the ability to knock electrons loose from atoms. Over the years these exceptional properties have made X-rays useful in many fields, such as medicine and research into the nature of the atom.
