I assume you are talking about the character from Lost, in which case she killed her father, she set light to the house while he was asleep and drunk inside, having taken out an insurance policy for her mother so that she wouldn't be left penniless.
See turns out that her mother was having an affair with Wayne while the man she married was in Korea, and Kate was the product of the affair.

Her mother was trying to shout at the hospital staff, saying "help me." Her mother was the one who turned her into the police, when she burned the house down with Wayne in it. It seems she set the house on fire while Wayne was asleep.
