pack a computer for a flight across the country?

I'd let somebody else do it. A professional packing and shipping company. May cost a few more dollars, but it will be packed right and probably insured.

Would take it to mailboxes etc and have them pack it for me. If it's a nice computer, it's worth paying them to pack it.
