A good meal to eat - always eat at least three to four hours before game time if at all possible - is a meat (I prefer chicken), two vegetables (green beans, squash w/onions, peas, a SMALL helping of mashed potatoes), some bread (one or two rolls w/wo butter or margarine), iced tea ( a couple of glasses), and then some brief stretching and warm-up before the pre-game warm-up - to get your digestion started. This is a routine when the high school team with which I am associated goes on the road for tournament time. And it's produced 13 state championships. (Of course, the talent and desire to win has helped a LITTLE.)

Who should drink water not gaterade, you should eat pasta the night before and eat bangels or bananas the morning before you play. You shouldn't drink too much water right right before otherwise you cramp up. Don't eat anything with in a hour or so of playing.

Eat carbs such as pasta the night before a game so that you have energy stored in your body for the next day. Before game days, eat something light that will digest easily in your stomach such as seafood.

any carbs are good, but the most important part is to eat at least 2 hours before your game/practice.
and, during the game drink gatorade/water.
i find chewing gum during game too keeps you fresh.

best thing i always found was to suck on some oranges right before a game, it gives you quick energy, and doesnt cramp you up. i also do the same thing at half time.
