I just want to know if this is an effective way to do this? I thought that it might save the number of writeable disks that I need to use. Thanks for any valuable answers!

that's one way of doing it but better yet would be to go out and get an external hard drive, they aren't that expensive and you can get GBs of backup space.

I make 2 backups of everything, one set on CD and the other to my external hard drive.

Compressing a file can save some space depending on the files being compressed and how large the files are. Using WinRAR [.rar] can help to decrease file size on most files better than WinZip [.zip] can. However, neither will compress large executable files much.

Purchasing an external drive can be an expensive alternative. Having a CDRW drive and moving files to CD is a cheaper alternative.

zipping them doesn't really save that much space so you'll be using a bunch of disks anyway. I recommend an external hard drive to use as a backup. Its easy to use, inexpensive and has plenty of reusable space for data.

Yes, it is an effective method. However, you should try finding out which compression format is better (I heard the .rar format saves more space).
