How do you find an overseas manufacturer?

I have a new product idea and want to find a reputable overseas manufacturer. I spoke with a company who has a similar product but for a different industry and they said they get their product manufactured in China but would not connect me with the specific manufacturer

You could contact the commercial section of the Chinese embassy in the U.S.:

http://us.mofcom.gov.cn/

They may be able to point you in the right direction if you ask nicely.

You could concievably try to contact the commercial section of the U.S. embassy in China, but they are likely to be less helpful, because commercial sections exist to promote exports rather than imports...

There are a number of website that you can go to. So called B2B marketplace are website with posting of products to buy and sell. Many of company are manufacturing companies that can produce a custom product. I suggest going to www.alibaba.com. Alibaba is a good source of information on worldwide products, manufacturers and other. To find domestic companies that manufacture go to www.thomasnet.com.

Call or write to the Chinese Consulate. They have people who are more than happy to assist you in finding a manufacturer for your goods.

There is a guide that is available at most sizeable public libraries. I believe it is called the Thomas guide. It lists manufacturers of almost any product imagineable.
