When fruit ripens, the connection to the stem weakens so that the fruit can drop to the ground to be eaten by an animal. It's nature's way of spreading the seeds to new locations. The purpose of the fruit isn't just to supply food for things...it's to tempt animals to EAT that fruit (with the seeds inside) so that they will poop the seeds out somewhere else.
