That if someone can't explain something in simple terms, then they don't really understand the concept?

Kind of-- however there are those things that are just not easy to explain.

Not really. There are times that I can't explain something verbally at all, it's just a picture/concept in my head...and *I'm* the only one that understands it. I often have to let that kind of thing percolate a while until I can explain it to others-but *I've* understood the concept from it's conception.

This is false, it takes a smart person to explain thing in simple form, that is so anyone can understand it. A person that can't do this is the one that doesn't understand the concept. Old saying, keep it simple stupid.

Totally. That is the best way to test soemone's understanding of something. Ask them to explain it in a fashion that a disinterested third party would understand it (so in that way it has to be in simple terms that everyone understands).

There are some things that just can't be simplified! Quantum Physics anyone? At times when you try to simplify things you can't portray the whole spectrum of the concept.

No...not at all...sometimes I can not explain simple things...like the meaning of a word...but still I know what it means. Here is an example...the word supple...do you know what that means. If a woman has supple breasts...chances are they are soft and nice to touch and look and chances are it means she is young...a young woman but if you look up supple in the dictionary it says supple means easily bendable. I tried to explain to some one what supple meant and then realized I could not then I looked it up in the dictionary only to find the dictionary definition is not how people actually use the word...maybe this was not the best example...it is late now...I hope this helped...

Some things can't be explained in simple terms. For instance, the color red.

I think so but that's just me. I like to keep things simple and to the point. No need to go around in circles to make oneself look smart. I hate it when people take things to the extreme.

I usually give people simple answers, like yes and no and I don't know, but they keep asking me why and why and why! That is where the conversation is endless!
