The Billionaires' Club

A nine-figure fortune won't get you much mention these days, at least not in these pages. This year, for the first time, everyone on The Forbes 400 has at least $1 billion. The collective net worth of the nation's wealthiest climbed $120 billion, to $1.25 trillion.

Surging real estate, oil and other asset prices paved the way for 28 new members. Developer John P. Manning used political savvy to build a $1.1 billion fortune, in part by brokering low-income housing projects.

Chesapeake Energy founders Aubrey McClendon and Tom L. Ward are two of the oil fortunes added to the list. Pouring 40 million caffeinated drinks a week landed Starbucks honcho Howard Schultz on our list of America's 400 richest.

I don't know where you live, but in NY we are behind the working mom. We have free after school care. We have rock bottom cheap or free, good child care at our YMCA with summer camp as well. We have excellent health insurance that is available unless you make tons of money. We have Food Banks to supplement some good food in the house for free; we have food stamps to also help; we have free education for the mom and government grants so they can get ahead and still live while they do it; we have HUD, that only takes 1/3 of your income so you aren't paying all your money just for housing; we have fuel assistance that I donate to every fuel bill so you don't freeze and spend your whole paycheck to stay warm; we have dad's pay child support or go to jail so our kids have decent clothes and child care; we have free birthcontrol so people don't get even more kids to take care of; we have free health clinics and immunizations; we have free daycare for poor mom's and subsidized daycare for less poor mom's....I am not sure what state you are in, but you may want to seriously look at what help you qualify for so that you can get your head above water. Don't despair. You sound smart, just scared. I was in your shoes. I got on my feet. I got educated, we made it. You will too. Take advantage of everything you need to give those kids the best chance. If daddy isn't paying child support, file for it and have it taken out of his paycheck. If he isn't working, he will have to start or go to jail. Best of luck.

they could furnish each and all the help and help mandatory, as maximum professional-lifers additionally agree. that's a leftist stereotype that conservatives do no longer want to assist babies, purely fiction. those babies are purely going to actual be young ones around 18 years. they are going to be taxpaying, contributing adults for some years. The advertising of Roe vs. Wade effectively exterminated a era of taxpayers, ability docs, attorneys, people who would desire to've made a distinction and for no longer something extra desirable than start administration. no longer medically mandatory ideas (rape, incest, threatens mothers life) or any remotely noble purpose.

I think the father should be hauled in and forced to work in shackles at a job of the Mother's choice 14 hour days and then hand over his paycheck.

If it has gotten to be too much, you could give them up for adoption. No shame in wanting them to have a better life than you did. Lots of people (me included) would like to adopt and don't want babies.

If you didn't want a solution why did you ask the question? Or did you think we'd all volunteer to pay your way. You made your bed now lie in it. Unfortunately, you are making the kids lie in it too.

That's why we have welfare, Jane. Americans (including us hard-hearted cons) are never going to let children starve.

But would it be asking too much for people to start taking personal accountability for having children they cannot afford?

I have one child. I am a single mom. I had him in my first year of law school and have had to work my a** off to give him a decent life. I don't keep having more. I don't rear him to think it's the government's responsibility to take care of him. I have made the sacrifices because I made the choice to marry the bum I married.

The system is broken and needs to be fixed. You don' t have to be a rich person to see this. Go spend some time in inner-city court.

Give some of your stereotypes a challenge.

She needs to evaluate her siluation. Move in with some one else, two families under one roof cuts overhead. Can the children be raised by a relative until the mother gets back on her feet? She needs to be proactive and look for solutions not just hopeing a solution will come to her. There are many programs out there she just needs to learn them.

Obviously some sort of welfare is needed. The father should, if possible, be forced to contribute too.
No thinking conservative could be totally against every kind of social welfare, it would lead to chaos. The rise in crime alone would probably be more expensive than welfare payments.
In my country it costs almost €120,000 per year for every convict in prison. Imagine how many convicts there would be if welfare was stopped.
