Why do people throw lit cigarette buts from moving cars? Are the stupid, ignorant, or just don't care?

Actually I think it goes to a larger point. The same reason that man is the only species that doesn't co-inside with its environment. There is a disconnect mentally. People in large part are small minded and don't think of the outcome of actions taken. Also on the whole human society looks in the span of a human life time and not on the larger scale. The throwing of the cigarette out the window is the same impulse as the littering, buying an s.u.v., and so on...... Also I think the other problem is on the whole the majority of humans are not very intelligent at all. Roughly 80 percent or so are right around an i.q. of 90 to 110. An i.q. of 80 and below I believe is considered mentally retarded. Taking this into consideration I think you can see why the world is going down the crapper.

I'll go with ignorant. In fact, i believe most smokers to be ignorant when it comes to their smoking habits. they don't care that when smoking on a public street, they are making nonsmokers...some of whom have more than an asthetic objection to smoke....inhale their non-filtered, 2nd hand smoke. It can't be avoided. Trust me, I've tried. The smoking bans are coming, and the more courteous the smokers are, the longer they'll take....so i'm all for them being ignorant, because soon, within 10 years, you won't see a cigarette on a public street, much the same way you don't see open bottles of liquor now. If we ban alcohol on the street, which doesn't float over and bother tea totalers, then we should do it for cigarettes too.

ALL of the above AND ...
the fact that they wish to inflict their horrid habit on not only the non-smokers around them (including asthmatics who WILL have Asthma Attacks going through the phlanx of smokers at entrances to stores or restaurants for example) but also the environment.

I've seen that unless they are HELD ACCOUNTABLE and FINED for EACH AND EVERY butt they throw out of the windows, drop on the ground, and have the packs taxed to the extreme, there will be NO CHANGE in this disgusting, filthy, environmentally damaging habit.

I don't do that as I don't drive if I did I still would not. I put all my butts in my pocket and then put them in a bin when I find one.

I smoke as I have an enlarged D4DR gene and thus has a pertensity towards addcition. Like most smokers I have tried to quit on many occasions. What makes me want to smoke more is sanctimounous non smokers trying to tell me how wrong I am. I was going to write more but I am off for a smoke.

*guilty* I don't know why I do it, I guess because where else will I put it? Yeah, yeah. Selfish, I know. Smoking really is disgusting. I try to take care of myself but can't kick that one habit.
However, I think some people need to get off their soapbox. Most of us smokers know how bad it is. But I don't think there's any one person reading this that doesn't have some kind of vice. So until we openly criticize everyone with a bad habit, let's back off a little, okay.

I throw mine out of the car window because I don't want it in my ashtray.I have a brand new car and keep it clean.I know it's against the law to do this.So I don't do it when cops are around.

same reason others throw beer bottles at road signs, theyre inconsiderate, but above all theyre stupid. especially in the fall when everything is so dry . fires start so easily. people throw bottles at signs glass breaks all over the road causing blow outs.

They are self-absorbed and think they can do no wrong. They don't want their cars filled with nasty butts. It's a disgusting habit and their brains are fried from nicotine.
