I have severed a few years in the military and for the State Department. These jobs forced me to travel quite a bit. My mom gave me a clock that had all the worlds times on it and had multi band radio in it. No more setting clocks and wondering what time it was back home. BTW it took batteries but was also duel voltage 110/220v very handy. 2 years ago my wife got my a Sony cyber shot digital camera. They make a really small one. Very handy as well. Didn't take much room and doesn't add to much to your weight. Hope this helps.

A journal would be a wonderful gift. Very thoughtful, and not something a lot of people would splurge on for themself. Just make sure when you pick it out that it is not too big, best if it fits into carry on luggage!

a journal is an excellent idea, do they have a digital camera? if so, get one of those little dohicky thingy that they can keep on their person to down their photos onto.(providing that they take a camera with them, if not then extra memory cards). that would be my big thing. i travel a lot and my laptop and camera always come with me because of the picture thing. but if not, then a digital camera.

a really nice digital camera my dear, one with a memory card that will hold several hundred pix
and a gift card to a photo developing place to pay for photos
