Why is a negitive times a positive number a negitive and a negitive * a negative a positive?

I don't understand this comcept. Can any one explain it?

Hi. This is a little difficult to explain in plain words so that it is completely understandable to everyone, I think. But maybe when you read multiple explanations from different people it will help.
So.
First, negative * positive: Let's say that you have 10 oranges. Now, I GIVE you (2 oranges) (-4 times). That's the same as saying that I GIVE you (-2 oranges) (4 times). In other words, I TAKE from you 2 oranges four times. You'll end up with two oranges.
In the same manner, when I GIVE you (-2 oranges) (-4 times), it's the same as when I TAKE (-2 oranges) (4 times) and that is the same as when I GIVE you (2 oranges) (4 times). You end up with 18 oranges (if you had 10 in the beginning).
Just think about it.

In reality,we only have natural numbers 1,2,3,4.....To expand the area of mathematical manipulation, we invent zero and introduce negative numbers. Since they are mathematical inventions, they have to be assigned properties. Thus you can add or subtract or multiply by zero , but division by zero is not permitted. The rules
-ve into -ve equals +ve ,and -ve into +ve becomes -ve are artefacts.
(A more advanced example is from vector algebra. You cannot divide a vector by another vector.)

In principle,you would be free to construct an algebra with differebnt rules .

somethings just are except them and move on. I'm sure some ancient mathematician worked it all out and explained it in great detail. Now it is just a simple maxim of mathimatics. Don't get too caught up in the little things.

This can hardly be explain.. You should ask the mathematician.. If you know any.. But they might not even know the answer to ya question cause it is something nobody have ever thought it.. everybody just follow the concept made by einstein or newton or whoever is it.. sory..

Say you take a step backward (-1) and you do this 5 times. Then, you have taken five steps backward (-5). So -1 x 5 = -5
