If you have only a very tiny colony of bacteria, too small to see its characteristics, then you can identify it by doing chemical tests, but it saves a lot of time (and money) if you can just spot what it is by looking at a large colony and identifying it by its appearance.
In the hospital, we are desperately trying to save the patients money, and we are trying to get them the best service we can - that means quickly identifying any bacteria that may be growing within them, so we can treat it with the right medicine.
A good technician in the hospital lab can save patients lives, and save patients many thousands of dollars every year.

if a person shows up in an emergency room and he has high fever, is spitting up blood, and is near death, it is important that you be able to take samples and get them identified by the lab quickly so that you can give this person the proper antibiotic before the die. knowing what different bacteria look like, especially pathogenic bacteria, enable us to speed up the process.
