A central heating and/or air conditioning system includes an air handler (or furnace) and supply and return air ducting. Room air enters the "cold air return" or return inlet and is conditioned via a heat exchanger and then enters the space again through the supply ducting. Return air inlets may be central, which usually include 1-3 large grilles located throughout the home. Or you may have have multiple return air inlets that may be located in each room of the home. Multiple return registers or grilles may look like the room's supply register/s.
I'm sure you have a return or returns. If you are having a hard time distinguishing return inlets from supply outlets, turn the fan on via the thermostat and hold a piece of tissue in front of each grille or register.

Kit R is right. The older furnaces that have the old metal duct work usually have smaller returns either in the baseboards or at the ceiling. The filter will be located at the air handler inside a narrow slot. These central systems were normally conversions from oil furnaces.

return air ducts take colder air from your rooms and heats it up through the furnce chamber and blown back thru the furnace fan to your rooms.. if your furncace has no return air it is likely drawing air from the funace room or basement it may even draw from outdoors if it is a newer furnace.. if you have no return air ducts and your house is energy effecient(air tight) you will notice doors closing byselfs and even feel a draft before your furnace fan kicks in..

It draws the cooler lower air into your furnace. It is then circulated past the heat exchanger and comes back out as hot. It also allows you to filter the air.

Where is the air that blows out of your furnace supposed to come from? Did you fail Physics?
